Last night, a stranger called to tell me she loved me. Funny, because sometimes I wonder if I love myself.
I don’t know why I picked up when my phone said “Unknown ID”. I’m about 90% sure this was a prank call. The stranger didn’t give me very many details. The details she did give didn’t add up. I knew I didn’t recognize the name she gave me.
“You changed my life”
But that other 10%? That’s the part of me that hoped it was real. Though she could have read it off a screen, the stranger knew both my first and last name. She claimed a name too unique for a prank call. Even so, it was all fake, right?
“Perhaps my unrequited love won’t be reciprocated”
I should be worried someone might be stalking me. But instead, I’m wondering why I almost stopped this stranger from hanging up.
Am I bored? lonely? curious? naive?
“I wish you the best”
As I headed back to the dorm before writing this, I glanced at the sky and saw a shooting star, then tried wishing the best for myself.
When I couldn’t, I wished for the stranger to see that same shooting star.
